During a conference call this afternoon, Joe Girardi said he and Brian Cashman have started talking about potential pitching coaches for next season.
“We want to get it done as quickly as possible,” Girardi said. “But we want to make sure we cover all our bases and make sure we interview as many people as we need to.”
Those discussions are in the very early stages. Girardi signed his deal on Thursday, and discussions began that same day. Girardi said they are considering internal and external candidates.
From what we’re heard so far bullpen coach Mike Harkey could be the front runner for the job. Leo Mazzone has already mentioned publicly that he would like the job, but Cashman might not like him because he feels like Mazzone used the Yankees for leverage when he got the pitching coach job with Baltimore.
We’ve taken a look at some other candidates here as well. Harkey may be the front runner, but from what it sounds like the Yankees are definitely keeping their options open and will talk with a few candidates.
